Schynige Platte

Those visiting Schynige Platte with the cogwheel railway will feel transported back to the days of belle époque. The nostalgic railway takes 50 minutes to travel up the 7 kilometre stretch. Wooden benches in the carriages, rolling stock from the 19th century and conductors in historic uniforms recall a bygone era.

During the journey and once at the top, visitors enjoy fantastic views of the Eiger, Mönch & Jungfrau. Schynige Platte is the departure point for very popular mountain hikes. It is also the site of the Botanical Alpine Garden, home to around 600 species of Alpine plants

The Schynige Platte Railway is offering a gift to open the summer season: the return journey with the historic railway is free, making an early-summer trip to the renowned excursion destination even more enjoyable. Schynige Platte affords vastly varied panoramic views, with the Alpine chain, the Lütschinen valleys and the Bödeli plain with Interlaken between Lakes Thun and Brienz. And perhaps the first of the 600 species of plants in the Botanical Alpine Garden will already be in bloom. The offer is valid on 26th May 2012.

The classic high-Alpine hike. The trail climbs steadily from Schynige Platte, then passing the Mändlenen hut and to the Faulhorn summit. It then leads down to Lake Bachalpsee before continuing almost level to the First summit station. Fantastic views of the summits and glaciers of the Bernese Alps along the entire route. This demanding trail requiring a good basic level of fitness. Hiking time: 6 hrs 10 min.

The Jungfrau Centenary Pass is valid on three consecutive days from 17 May to 21 October 2012. The pass entitles the holder to unlimited travel on the entire Jungfrau Railways network.

On the anniversary of the first trip up to Schynige Platte in 1893, on 14 June, guests profit from historically low prices. Guests of all ages can make the trip to the spectacular vantage point above Wilderswil at the same price as yesteryear.
